Songs and Liturgy 12.29

Welcome! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. If you have been with us for the last month, we’ve been celebrating the season of Advent, a time of expectation and anticipation where we celebrate the incarnation of our Savior. If you have been around longer than that, you will know that we don’t just celebrate Jesus at Christmas and Easter here. Each week we gather to remember how God, our loving Father, stepped into our mess; pursued us and is pursuing us; and gives us redemption through Jesus. Today, let us look on the life and light that has come. If you’re walking in darkness look to Christ. He is the light and your salvation. Let us worship today and fix our eyes on the light, on Christ who is our hope and our peace.

The Call
Arise, shine, for your light has come!
The glory of the Lord has risen upon us. Let us praise the Lord together. The sun shall no longer be our light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on us, for the Lord will be our light, and our God will be our glory. The Lord will be our everlasting light, and our days of sorrow will end. Come, let us sing to our light and salvation!
—based on Isaiah 60

Song: OH! Great is Our God

As we seek and worship a holy God, we realize that we are sinful people in need of rescue.

The Confession
Almighty and merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you and one another in both our actions and our inactions. We recognize that in Jesus Christ our light has come, yet often we choose to walk in shadows and ignore the light.
Gracious God, forgive our sins and remove from us the veil of darkness that shrouds our lives. Awakened by your Word and sacrament, may we rise to the radiance of Christ’s glory. Amen.

Song: Give Me Faith

Know that Jesus has made a way for us through the cross, be assured of your right standing with God because of Him.

The Assurance
God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
–Romans 5:8-10

Song: Come Thou Fount

The Peace
Because Jesus has reconciled and forgiven us we now have peace with him and with each other. In the spirit of that peace, take a moment to greet those around you.
“Peace be with you!”

The Offering

Song: All Glory Be to Christ

Father God,
we long to hear your holy Word in fresh ways. Open our ears to the call of your voice. Open our eyes to your mercies anew today.
Fill us with anticipation for your future. Amen.

The Word
“Two Sons and a Father”
Luke 15:20b-32

The Supper

Song: O My Soul Arise

Song: Rock of Ages

We sing and read confessions together to express our unity in faith and our desire to do the things God’s word has called us to.

The Commitment
Christ is the light of our souls:
We rejoice in this great source of truth.
Christ is the light of our homes:
We rejoice in this great source of peace.
Christ is the light of the world:
We rejoice in this great source of hope.
–Worship Sourcebook F9.1,2

The Prayer

Song: God is Good

The Sending
Go out as Christ’s true lights, dispersing the darkness of evil, for his grace, his power and his peace go with you.
